【YAMATO】: So I thought, ahh— this definitely made her cry—, and reflected on it.

【YAMATO】: You awake?

【TSUMUGI】: Ah...... I'm awake! Was there something?

【YAMATO】: Sorry that this is so late at night.
【YAMATO】: I was thinking that onii-san was in the wrong a while ago.
I said too much.
【YAMATO】: I'm very sorry.

【TSUMUGI】: I was the one who went too far.
I was imprudent. Please excuse my behavior!

【YAMATO】: Don't sound so ashamed.
I only remembered later that you were a crybaby, manager.
【YAMATO】: So I thought, ahh— this definitely made her cry—, and reflected on it.

[1]: I, I wasn't crying!
[2]: H, how did you know...?
[3]: I was in the wrong...!

【TSUMUGI】: I, I wasn't crying!

【YAMATO】: If that's the case, then, it's fine.
【YAMATO】: I just wanted to say a word of apology.
If I woke you up while you were asleep, I'm sorry.

【TSUMUGI】: Not at all...... Thank you for going out of your way.
Yamato-san, you're very kind.....

【YAMATO】: Idiot. Aren't I apologizing because I acted coldly.

【TSUMUGI】: You're a kind person. I was very happy to receive this message.
Good night, Yamato-san.

【YAMATO】: Right, good night.

【TSUMUGI】: H, how did you know...?

【YAMATO】: Because I've seen your tear-stained face so many times, Tsumugi.

【TSUMUGI】: I was in the wrong...!

【YAMATO】: I didn't have any maturity. Don't say it any more.
【YAMATO】: I just wanted to say a word of apology.
If I woke you up while you were asleep, I'm sorry.

【TSUMUGI】: Not at all...... Thank you for going out of your way.
Yamato-san, you're very kind.....

t/n:

1. screenshots for this chat were provided by @ryotsene on twitter! thank you again for taking the time to send me these screenshots!!

2. plot-wise, this chat is a continuation from yamato's 4th halloween chapter, so if you haven't read that one, I recommend reading it first so that the context for this chat makes a bit more sense. tl;dr tsumugi pressed too hard on the acting thing and yamato snapped at her, though!

3. I'm not an expert on character voices and tones, and I'm even less of an expert on those inflections are conveyed in japanese, which already puts me in the red when it comes to trying to convey distinct character voices in english, and then yamato flips my knowledge of the world upside down by consistently ending his sentences with わs, so basically what I'm trying to say is that I really have no idea how to ''''characterize'''' yamato's voice when I translate his chats

but reading this chat was interesting because some of yamato's phrasings feel..... a bit more awkward? I'm not sure if it's a.) meant to convey that he's bad at apologizing, b.) meant to convey that he really feels bad for his "so if I don't say what you want to hear you aren't interested in talking to me" jab, or c.) me reading into this chat wrong LOL

4. translating onii-san as yamato impromptu-ly speaking in third person seemed like a really good idea up until I remembered that first person subjects are implied in japanese whereas they definitely are not in english

5. yamato tells tsumugi to not 恐縮 — I translated it as "don't sound ashamed" (or don't sound sorry — the basic gist looks to be 'don't feel so bad'), but apparently it also has the alternative meaning of 'to shrink back in fear'! I thought about it though and I wasn't sure if tsumugi's lines really carried that same desperate sort of Please Excuse Me And My Horrid Insolence For Having Done The Extreme Disservice Of Terribly Wronging You apology (tsumugi tends to emphasize and restate herself) (I like how I randomly switch between referring to tsumugi as the player and referring to her as a distinct character) (anyways she tends to emphasize and restate herself a lot, so saying "I was in the wrong, I did x, I did y" is fairly in line w/ her saying "it was cool, it was x, it was also y" in less stressful situations), but I thought I'd make a note of how yamato could be reading that into her behavior!

I think I've talked about 反省 before (where yamato says he reflected), but basically it means to have come to the conclusion that you acted poorly and to now be in the process of regretting and wishing to reform your actions

6. yamato's response in the first path reads to me like he is not buying it, but he is also trying to be respectful and not press the issue I guess?

7. yamato nikaidou is so bad at apologizing, I know that he's trying to be nice but calling someone a crybaby and an idiot when you're apologizing for making them cry is not in How To Be Nice 101?

8. I first looked at the screenshots for this chat shortly after first reading gaku's 4th ordinary days chapter and so that was a very trying time for me because I had tsumugi on one side being like "yes I went and cried tears of frustration while trying to hide it from the members" and then I had yamato on the other side being like "actually I have seen you cry lots js" so I was like WOW

but, I mean, I'm probably just reading too deeply into it; I think the intention behind yamato's line isn't actually meant to have anything to do with tsumugi trying to hide it when she cries! I think it's moreso meant to be yamato's acknowledgment that he knows when things are rough for her, or that he (and/or the other members or the work in general) has done a lot to make her cry in the past, idk

the sudden first name drop definitely caught me off guard, though!

9. the line about seeing her crying face itself gave me a lot of trouble translating because even though the fundamental meaning is really just "I know because I've seen you cry lots up until now", it's got a lot of implications that are trickier to convey without taking up extra word space to do it. first of all specifying that he's seen her crying face (or tear-stained face if we wanna get all jdrama up in here) rather than just seeing her cry changes the sentence structure in english and makes figuring out how to translate the いっぱい even more awkward

in a sense, I think you can read it as yamato trying to say that he feels like tsumugi's been made to cry more times than was necessary, even if she is a crybaby and an idiot, and so he's also saying that he feels like he's seen, like, enough crying tsumugis to last him a lifetime

10. I'm still not 100% on how to properly translate yamato's response in the third path; I'm at least fairly certain that since he's saying もう言わないで, he's telling tsumugi to not say whatever the thing he doesn't want said is, but I'm not sure if he's saying "don't say you were in the wrong anymore", or if this is a callback to yamato's early halloween chapters where he kept throwing the word adult-like (in this case, 'maturity' is written w/ the characters for 'adult', so!) around like it was cheap candy, and he's saying he won't give tsumugi a hard time by referring to himself as an adult-like onii-san anymore?

so I kept it vague in my translation but I thought I'd make a note of it down here!
