NAGI ROKUYA / INDOOR FESTIVAL : PART 1
Nov. 9th, 2015 04:39 am【TSUMUGI】: Somehow, this seems almost like a personality analysis and so it's very interesting! I'd also like to learn the rules and try it, sometime!
【NAGI】: By all means, let's have a game. I'll welcome you.
【TSUMUGI】: Nagi-san, thank you for all of your hard work!
The costume designs for IDOLiSH7's new single have been completed!
【TSUMUGI】: The costumes were made using a chess knight as inspiration.
【NAGI】: Having an odd number of knights is very unique and magnificent.
【NAGI】: I am a fan of chess. How about you, manager?
【TSUMUGI】: I'm not very familiar with the rules.
【NAGI】: Chess is a game that is perfectly suited to a woman such as yourself.
【NAGI】: The strongest piece in all of chess is the queen.
The match is determined based on the movements of the Queen.
【TSUMUGI】: That's true! Is the king not strong?
【NAGI】: While the king can become an excellent warrior at times, normally he is protected by the rooks, bishops, pawns, along with the knights, and the queen.
【NAGI】: Of course, the knight protects the queen. Just like in this song.
【NAGI】: However, in moving to protect the king, or in extreme cases a knight, the queen's audacity can confuse the opponent, thus giving way to victory.
【TSUMUGI】: Somehow, this seems very interesting! My interest in chess has gone up!
【TSUMUGI】: Nagi-san, is chess your specialty?
【NAGI】: I would not go so far as to say it is my specialty.
Regarding chess, I enjoy startling my opponent.
【NAGI】: Whether I surprise them and win, or suffer an ignominious defeat, depends on the opponent.
【NAGI】: Incidentally, I won against Sogo, but lost to Iori.
【NAGI】: Iori won against me, but lost to Sogo.
【TSUMUGI】: It's a three-way deadlock situation, then!
How did those results come about?
【NAGI】: Our personalities and strategies are reflected on the chessboard.
【NAGI】: Sogo is weak to tricky strategies, Iori is weak to psychological warfare, and I am weak against solid and steady tactics.
【TSUMUGI】: Somehow, this seems almost like a personality analysis and so it's very interesting! I'd also like to learn the rules and try it, sometime!
【NAGI】: By all means, let's have a game. I'll welcome you.

1. this is another one of those chats where translating the title took me longer than translating the body.... "やり方" means more like "How To Do ____", or "means of doing x", but since nagi talks about how iori and sougo play games within the content of the chat, I felt like the plural was meant to be implied, or at the very least that the title was implying that various methods would be addressed? so I moved things around a little bit and I'm still not very satisfied w/ it but what can you do :x
2. obvs nagi is commenting on how they have an odd number of (7) knights in idolish7 if everyone's costumes are modeled off of knights! as opposed to an even number (2). when he asks about tsumugi, I think he's somewhat inviting tsumugi to play, although it's tough to connotate that in english......
what do you mean connotation can't be written as a verb
3. the first time nagi mentions the queen, he writes it in katakana (so as to refer to the chess piece), but the second time he writes it in kanji (女王) — referring to an actual queen that you'd see in any other context. hence why I capitalized the second one! he also separates the pieces into three categories — the rooks/bishops/pawns, the knights, and the queen — probably because knights and queens were the topic of discussion here!
4. where is idolish7's song where the knight protects the queen, huh. I'm guessing nagi's referring to the new single that was revealed at star camp, and whose costumes are modeled off of chess knights/featured in the indoor fest cards?
5. nagi's scenario that he's explaining with the knight/king/queen is probably one of those traps that iori mentioned in his first indoor fest chapter? I'm not very familiar w/ chess but he said that nagi likes to set traps using his queen, so.........
[iori voice] sometimes I wonder if those two aren't actually very good people
6. the word that tsumugi uses can be used in a more casual setting and so usually I translate it as "good at", but since nagi interprets it as being as extreme as 'specialty', I translated it like that in this case. otherwise, it's like "nagi-san are u good at chess" "well, I wouldn't say I'm -good- at it" — basically, though, he's saying that he doesn't really play to win and moreso plays to dick around with his opponent and have fun.
sometimes I wonder if I make nagi speak too formally or flowery-ly, but that's kind of the voice I've set for him....... I've dug my own grave
7. ok, nagi describing sougo's strategy as "psychological warfare" is definitely interpretive translating on my part, because what nagi actually says is "iori is weak to strategies where the opponent slowly corners him psychologically" (flashbacks to tsumugi commenting "you use a strategy that's as if you're strangling their necks with a silk rope, I see.....") — but that felt too long, so I changed it to psychological warfare. that, and well, "iori is weak to psychological warfare" as a phrasing makes me laugh. nagi's original description stipulates that it's Slow And Steady Cornering going on, though!
【NAGI】: By all means, let's have a game. I'll welcome you.
