3. since iirc the unit chats are all interrelated within their units (riku and iori's both covered the game center fight & they BOTH SEND THEIR APOLOGIES TO TSUMUGI I'M smh) (I haven't looked at the full pythag picture yet but I've seen a similar thematic overlap there, too!) it's possible that tamaki's talks more about why exactly it is that sougo is collapsing in this here rabbit chat, but in the meantime I'm going to assume that it's probably stress/overworking based?
tbh sougo's physical condition is almost as wavering as riku's is since he has all of these stomach ulcers and anemic histories and general collapsings going on
4. おかげさまで is a v. japanese phrase that you use when someone has offered you their thoughts/consideration, it literally means "thanks to you", but it's not like sougo is literally saying that the reason he's gotten better is thanks to tsumugi asking if he's gotten better. it's kind of close to saying "thank you for checking", but since there are other phrasings that would literally mean 'thank you for checking in on me', I decided to translate okagesama literally in this case
5. こそ is my Least Favorite Phrase To Translate Of The Week

I messed with sougo's description of tamaki's behavior because 離れなくて doesn't quite translate as positively in english; if I wrote "he wouldn't go away the entire time"/"he wouldn't separate from me the entire time" (bc ずっと) I feel like it looks too much like sougo is saying he wanted tamaki to go away, or like there's a negative connotation (in sougo's opinion) to tamaki's behavior? it's not that 離れる necessarily has a positive connotation in japanese (imo it can go both ways but I think the general connotation is that it's a very willful separation), but I didn't want it to look like sougo was trying to say he wanted tamaki to leave him alone
so I took the 'willful' part of 離れる, flipped it around, stuck in the ずっと awkwardly, and now we have "tamaki insisting on staying" instead of "tamaki wouldn't leave the entire time", the #1 least literal translation I have ever posted
7. tamaki's big brother instincts are No Joke (it's been mentioned before that he also gets that way when riku isn't feeling too great) (tamaki is the Most Important Child just try to look me in the eye and tell me I'm wrong)
8. sougo says that tamaki was '持たれて'd on the bed and normally when I see もたれて I think of 凭れて (to be collapsed on), and that's what fits the context of tamaki being asleep in relation to the bed rather than passively holding the bed (as per 持たれて), so I've translated it ''incorrectly'' with the assumption that this is just strange kanji usage on sougo's part
9. sougo refers to aya as tamaki's imouto-san and I know he's being polite but sougo pls you're 20 and aya is a high schooler I don't think you need to call her -san
then again he does call tsumugi (18) -san, so

tl;dr his backstory is too angsty for me, but IDK!!! I'm sad when I think about it because when tamaki comes clean about wanting to find aya by appearing on TV, he's very upfront about it? I remember he got into a few fights with the other members because tamaki was very willing to parade information about aya and his family history in the public eye as long as it'd help him find aya; there were offers to make a TV program about it, or talk of announcing the details of how tamaki was looking for his younger sister, and some of the other members (iirc I think it was actually sougo?) found it objectionable because they thought tamaki should keep his family matters private, because the more he reveals, the more people are going to gossip and pass judgment on his situation and turn his family into cardboard cutouts
gosh I can't remember the exact quotes but basically tamaki's response was something like "if it turns into huge gossip, that's fine. the bigger the gossip, the more likely aya will hear that I'm looking for her" and it basically came off as tamaki saying that he was fine if his situation got grossly represented and blown up by the press, and he was willing to disclose whatever details were necessary for that
but at the same time there are obviously a lot of details that tamaki didn't want to talk about (his mother, how he and aya were raised in a facility—I think I've mentioned before that tamaki's OD chats cover his dad showing up at the facility, too?), even when it just came to talking about his situation with the rest of idolish7. probably a large part of that is because Tamaki Sucks @ Explaining 2k15, but idk, the fact that either he opened up about this stuff to sougo, or sougo asked him about it, is very important to me, someone please give tamaki yotsuba the platform he deserves,
11. vaguely it occurs to me that like 90% of the mezzo unit chats are Tamaki Having To Take Care of Sougo (sougo gets hammered in one of the later chats and tamaki has to look after him while he's hungover too) and I'm just like please save tamaki yotsuba from having to babysit this 20 year old manchild
I mean!!! it's!!!!! very important to me that tamaki has the chance to take care of other people (it makes his 了解。俺が継ぐ!" appeal skill line all the more Emotional的), but also god someone save him from babysitter duty

14. next on my questionings of strange kanji use, tsumugi says 言ってしまいそう instead of 行ってしまいそう, but I don't think you can どこかに言う, so I've translated it 'incorrectly' with the assumption of a typo yet again.

I remember he got into a few fights with the other members because tamaki was very willing to parade information about aya and his family history in the public eye as long as it'd help him find aya; there were offers to make a TV program about it, or talk of announcing the details of how tamaki was looking for his younger sister, and some of the other members (iirc I think it was actually sougo?) found it objectionable because they thought tamaki should keep his family matters private, because the more he reveals, the more people are going to gossip and pass judgment on his situation and turn his family into cardboard cutouts
gosh I can't remember the exact quotes but basically tamaki's response was something like "if it turns into huge gossip, that's fine. the bigger the gossip, the more likely aya will hear that I'm looking for her" and it basically came off as tamaki saying that he was fine if his situation got grossly represented and blown up by the press, and he was willing to disclose whatever details were necessary for that
but at the same time there are obviously a lot of details that tamaki didn't want to talk about (his mother, how he and aya were raised in a facility—I think I've mentioned before that tamaki's OD chats cover his dad showing up at the facility, too?), even when it just came to talking about his situation with the rest of idolish7. probably a large part of that is because Tamaki Sucks @ Explaining 2k15, but idk, the fact that either he opened up about this stuff to sougo, or sougo asked him about it, is very important to me, someone please give tamaki yotsuba the platform he deserves,
11. vaguely it occurs to me that like 90% of the mezzo unit chats are Tamaki Having To Take Care of Sougo (sougo gets hammered in one of the later chats and tamaki has to look after him while he's hungover too) and I'm just like please save tamaki yotsuba from having to babysit this 20 year old manchild

13. the "preparing yourself for something" (覚悟決める) is first of all a translation where I'm questioning if I really conveyed the weight properly, but second of all a callback to sougo's response at the end of his 2nd unit chapter! actually the second half of this entire chat is a callback to the ending of his 2nd chapter, but, y'know
14. next on my questionings of strange kanji use, tsumugi says 言ってしまいそう instead of 行ってしまいそう, but I don't think you can どこかに言う, so I've translated it 'incorrectly' with the assumption of a typo yet again.

17. tsumugi refers to herself(?) as ふつつかもの, which then sets off the end of the chat which results in sougo blushing?? for some reason?? and tsumugi saying that she is hazukashii????? I don't know enough to properly look up the context for ふつつかもの to know why saying it should invoke these levels of hazukashii, so I've just tried to translate the last exchange as literally as possible and am hoping for the best.
