TENN KUJO / NOVEL BONUS : PART 2

【RIKU】: That's 'cause Tenn-nii was gentle and could do anything.
【TENN】: That's because Riku was gentle and a good kid.

【TSUMUGI】: Let's have some small talk!

【TENN】: Alright.

【RIKU】: Small talk?

【TSUMUGI】: This is the first time the two of you have been connected via rabbit chat.

【TENN】: That's true.

【RIKU】: Yeah. That's why, I sent you a friend request.
【RIKU】: Why won't you add me?
You don't plan on adding me?

【TENN】: Because I don't really use rabbit chats.

【RIKU】: Then tell me your phone number.

【TENN】: Another time.

【RIKU】: This time!!!!!

【TENN】: Hey, you. You suggested it, so hurry up and start the small talk.

【TSUMUGI】: I'm terribly sorry.....!
Umm, what are your favorite foods?

【RIKU】: Omurice.

【TENN】: Omurice.

【TSUMUGI】: Umm, favorite sweets?

【RIKU】: Donuts.
Also, I like pancakes, too.

【TENN】: Donuts.

【TSUMUGI】: Favorite animal?

【RIKU】: Cats.

【TENN】: Cats.

【TSUMUGI】: What is your favorite type of music?

【RIKU】: J-pop.

【TENN】: J-pop.

【TSUMUGI】: That's what I'd expect from twins!
You're exactly in sync!
You get along ridiculously well!

【RIKU】: Do we really?

【TSUMUGI】: You really do! You're a nice combo!
You get along so well that there's absolutely no need for the two of you to fight!

【RIKU】: Ehehe! Is that how it is?

【TENN】: Nice assist.

【TSUMUGI】: What sort of children were the two of you?

I've frequently heard Riku-san speak very highly of his Tenn-nii-san!

【TENN】: You don't have the right to call me nii-san, though?

【TSUMUGI】: I've heard him speak very highly of you, Kujo-san!

【RIKU】: That's 'cause Tenn-nii was gentle and could do anything.

【TENN】: That's because Riku was gentle and a good kid.

【TSUMUGI】: There's a mutual brotherly emotion, then!

【TENN】: Our parents disciplined us that way, so.

【RIKU】: Was there really any disciplining?

【TENN】: So that we'd come to respect each other.

They were always sure to praise us equally.

【TSUMUGI】: There was respect?

【TENN】: Right.
Riku was ill and so it was rough for him, but he tried his best and was a good kid.

I looked after my younger brother and was told I was a good kid.

【RIKU】: I was always told it, too—!
Mom said that even if you got tired of sticking with me, Tenn-nii, you never got contrary, and you were a gentle kid, and really admirable and incredible.
【RIKU】: Of course, they praised me, too!
Did you have them praising you, too, Tenn-nii?

【TENN】: That's true. This is what I heard.
That even though there were so many things you couldn't do, Riku, since you never felt inferior or jealous of me, you were an incredible kid, and an admirable one.

【RIKU】: That's because, Tenn-nii, you did all of the things that I wanted to do for my share, too!

【TENN】: Since you were always grateful for it, I was happy, too.

【TSUMUGI】: You have a wonderful family, then!
I can easily picture the image of how the two of you were raised to get along well.

【RIKU】: Thanks!
【RIKU】: I didn't say this, but ever since TRIGGER debuted, I've been constantly chasing after you through the TV!

【TENN】: I was singing while thinking it'd be nice if it could reach you, too, Riku.

【RIKU】: I saw it! It definitely reached me!
I was happy to get to see your face, Tenn-nii!
【RIKU】: But, for that same reason, I guess I didn't really like TRIGGER that much.

【TENN】: Why was that?

【RIKU】: It felt like they'd stolen you, Tenn-nii.
Mom and Dad would sometimes stick complaints onto the other two.

【TENN】: That story sounds interesting so can I ask for the details?

【TSUMUGI】: Then, let's hear about Kujo-san and the other two members of TRIGGER next!

t/n:

1. it's very strange translating a part two without dialogue paths! not that I mind.............. 90% of my mistakes happen when copy/pasting between dialogue paths.....

2. I will never forgive tsumugi takanashi for cutting off the rabbit chat where she did

3. since I'm guessing this is also a pre-interview chat, I'm.... not sure what happened between this and ten's first chapter to improve the mood BUT MOSTLY I'M LIKE WHAT THE HECK EVEN IS A RABBIT CHAT

at first I thought it was like takanashi pro's office-wide messaging system and so that was why they had kinako stamps but then tsumugi started using it to contact trigger members and trigger members started using kinako stamps and I was like @ _ @ and now apparently you can friend people via rabbit chat so it's basically the way of trademark dodging an IM namedrop?

but where do the kinako stamps come from

4. ten says "今度" ("next time/a time in the future"), and riku replies with "今", and normally I'd translate ima as 'now', but since in this case to me it almost feels like riku's cutting the 度 off of ten's statement, I changed it to "another/(this) time" for a similar sense!

5. since I insert "you"s into my translations all the time (although I've been rereading my old translations and there are a lot of strange third person statements coming from tsumugi, I should fix those sometime...), the same meaning doesn't really transfer from japanese to english, but in japanese it's generally considered rude (or impersonal) to refer to someone using a second-person pronoun! normally you'd just use their name (hence why I put weird 3rd person statements), but since that looks strange in english I've been adding in "you"s without really even thinking about it.

anyways, in this case, when ten says 'hey you' he literally says 'hey you' and I was like whoa there son

6. links my omurice post for the 1000th time

7. hotcake drama 2k15 remember the manga chapter (TODAY I FOUND OUT BABY TEN BURNED HIS FINGERS MAKING THE PANCAKES FOR BABY RIKU AND I ALMOST CRIED) (I'M CRYING THINKING ABOUT IT NOW) (I SAW A BANDAID ON HIS FINGER AND THE TEARS BEGAN TO FLOW)

8. tsumugi says "naisu combo" and ten replies with "naisu assist"

9. tsumugi calls ten "ten-nii-san" (with the nii as a diminutive form like how riku calls him), and ten responds by saying that he doesn't particularly care for being called "nii-san" by tsumugi (without the diminutive form, so more like how iori calls mitsuki)

I would like to take a moment to say that off the record (aka not while they're on camera), never has ten told riku he doesn't have a right or reason to call him ten-nii (while they're on camera is a different story though)

anyways the translation wound up being a bit awkward because of the aforementioned need to insert second person pronouns into english....

10. 90% of my woes wrt this chat are "why are pronouns implied in japanese but not in english" because I wanted to talk about the first time ten refers to himself and riku as a collective "we" but then I realized I've had to write 'we' into his lines countless times beCAuse OF THe imPLiEd PRoNOuns

anyways, he specifically refers to himself and riku as bokura and it was a very big deal to me

11. I'm not quite sure what exactly is going on in riku's line about his mom, like at first I thought his mom was telling him to not get tired of ten sticking with him because ten was a gentle kid or something but then since it looks like it's implied to be praising ten, I switched it around so that it was saying that ten never took out having to look after riku on riku himself, basically?

ten has a pretty good personality tbh but in a sense I think that's his weak point because he is (many things) really good at putting himself second, or like, otherwise adapting himself? like he does the really angelic and kind-seeming public exterior really well, but he's also really good at the cold personified blizzard impression, and now that I think about it I feel like it all comes back down to how ten is good at adapting to what he perceives a situation as needing from him without any complaints?

maybe you wouldn't call that a good personality, but........

12. ten saying that he was singing for riku's sake after leaving the nanase family got me like [muted screaming at my device] because THAT WAS NEVER MenTIOned IN THE maIN sTORy anD THAT chANGES (almost) EVERYTHIGN ABOUT TEN'S CHARACTERIZATION

13. since ten left the nanase family in middle school but didn't debut until he was 16 or 17 (since trigger won the rookie award the previous year), that basically means that he disappeared from riku's life for at least a full three or four years, sometimes I forget that (since in the interim time he was studying abroad in that english-speaking country)

14. ten being so interested in hearing the rude names his parents had for gaku and ryuu.........
